What Does a Shower Remodel Actually Cost in San Diego?

You could find quotes closer to $8,000 or less. These quotes usually mean you’re getting a low-quality remodel, or you’re paying for labor and sourcing your own materials. When the installation is done, you have no warranty. If something goes wrong after your project, you’re on your own.

In this industry, you get what you pay for. Typically, when a homeowner goes for a lower-end shower remodel, they receive lower-quality results. Either the area will last a few years, or the installation will be done poorly and cause more problems later. Regardless, you’re paying for another shower remodel in a short period of time.

On the high end, custom projects in neighborhoods like La Jolla or Rancho Santa Fe can reach $40,000 or more on the shower alone. That is not unusual when high-end materials and plumbing work are involved.

What Makes the Cost of a Shower Remodel Go Up or Down?

Here are the main cost factors to keep in mind when remodeling your shower:

• Size - Most contractors price a standard shower (roughly 60 inches by 36 inches) as a baseline. If you go bigger, the material and installation costs will climb. Some homeowners also make structural changes to the space itself, such as demoing a soffit or bump-out to create more room. Both require construction work that increases the project's total cost.

• Plumbing Changes and Fixtures - Not all contractors include plumbing changes in the cost. Moving a showerhead to a different wall or relocating a drain is a big price driver. If you’re relocating the shower drain on the first floor, it may require cutting into your foundation. Adding rain shower heads, body sprays (side-mounted wall jets), and more showerheads all add plumbing connections and parts. The more fixtures you have, the higher the cost.

• Seating - Seating requires framing work behind the shower wall to support the weight load. Different seat types require specific materials and quantities, which cause costs to vary. Fold-down seats, corner seats, and not fully built-in bench seats are among the more affordable options. A built-in framed bench seat is typically the most expensive option, adding around $1,200.

• Storage - Wall niches cost more than corner shelves. If built-in storage isn’t a must-have, corner shelves can do the same job for less.

• Doors - A curtain rod is the most affordable option. A quality quarter-inch tempered clear glass door with a lifetime warranty costs more upfront ($1,800-$5,000, depending on the size, thickness, and layout) but won't need to be replaced.

What Makes San Diego Shower Costs Unique?

In colder climates, builders rarely put exterior windows inside a shower. The same can’t be said for San Diego. Windows in the tub and shower area are common in San Diego because of the ideal weather. That window needs proper waterproofing from the inside. Waterproofing a window in the tub and shower area adds roughly $900 to the project.

California combos are everywhere in homes built from the mid-1990s onward, especially in planned communities and HOA neighborhoods. A California combo is a design where a bathtub and a walk-in shower are installed side by side in the same bathroom.

The shower portion of a Cali combo is often as small as 40 by 40 inches. Most homeowners want the tub out so they can have a functional shower. Non-standard dimensions make materials harder to source. Working around 2 water sources that come with a California Combo adds complexity and cost.

Older homes in areas such as North Park, Mission Hills, Point Loma, parts of Chula Vista, and La Mesa often have cast-iron plumbing and non-standard wall configurations. Some have tubs set against only 2 walls instead of 3. A standard shower remodel assumes a 3-wall pocket. When one side is open, the contractor has to close it off first, whether that's by framing a new wall, adding a pony wall, or doing custom glasswork.

How Long Does a Shower Remodel Take in San Diego?

Tile work can take roughly a week for a quality installation. With a curing time between each stage, the contractor needs to apply the waterproofing membrane, set the mortar base, and install the tile. Anyone promising a tile shower in 2 days is skipping steps.

Solid-surface systems, such as acrylic or BP-Cor2 shower walls, can be installed in 1-2 days. The contractor will perform a down-to-the-studs demo and install solid-surface walls. The installer will address any structural issues behind the walls before the new surface goes in.

A normal part of a full remodel is the demolition, which takes a half day to a full day before any installation begins.

Overlay installs can be done in a single day. This is where a contractor goes over existing surfaces without tearing anything out. Structural issues behind the walls won’t be addressed, so the moisture damage will persist.

What Should You Look for When Hiring a Contractor in San Diego?

You can always find someone who will do it for less. You should be cautious about contractors who quote under $10,000 in San Diego. It usually means labor-only pricing with materials not included, no warranty, unlicensed work, or all three. If you go this route, consider what you’re willing to sacrifice.
