The choice between clear and frosted shower glass affects more than just the style of your tub or shower. Your choice of glass also affects how private your shower feels, how much maintenance it requires, and the overall feel of your bathroom. It makes sense that you don’t want to choose a shower glass that’s frustrating to live with.
At Shugarman’s Bath, this is a decision many of our homeowners have made during their design consultations. In most cases, the choice comes down to whether you value privacy or need a type of glass that’s easier to clean and has a more open look.
In this article, you’ll learn how clear and frosted shower glass compares in cost, maintenance, privacy, and appearance so you can decide which option is the better fit for your bathroom.

Important note: Before comparing the two, it helps to know that Shugarman’s Bath mainly offers clear glass and rain glass. Frosted glass is available only by special request. We’re still comparing both options so you can better determine which type of glass is best for your shower remodel.
Clear glass gives you a full view inside and out of the shower, while frosted glass offers more privacy.
Outside of shower visibility, each option differs in appearance, cost, and upkeep (which can affect how easy it is to keep the glass looking clean).

Clear glass can vary in price depending on style, layout, and size preferences. You can expect clear glass to range from about $1,800 to $5,000.
Frosted glass is typically more expensive than clear glass because of the finish. You can expect an added charge of about $30 per square foot for frosted glass. For example, if a piece of clear glass measuring 10 square feet costs $1,800, that same piece with frosted glass would cost $2,100.
$30 x 10 square feet + $1,800 = $2,100.
Pricing will still vary based on the size and style of the glass enclosure installed.
Clear glass is easier to clean and maintain compared to frosted glass because its surface is smoother and easier to wipe free of smudges, soap scum, and water spots.
The etched surface of frosted glass is less forgiving to clean. It has a porous, textured surface that holds onto finger oils, smudges, and water spots. Its textured surface can hide residue better than clear glass. However, that can make buildup easier to miss. When you need to clean your glass, the surface is likely to show wear if cleaned too aggressively.
Clear glass is usually easier to wipe down because its protective coating helps repel finger oils, water spots, and soap scum. That said, it should not be scrubbed harshly, since swirl marks can show once the glass dries.
It’s recommended to clean both clear and frosted shower glass using soft tools such as a microfiber cloth, a light sponge, or a squeegee. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh scrubbing, and ammonia-based cleaners since they can damage both types of glass surfaces.
Frosted glass gives you more privacy, while clear glass makes the tub and shower area feel more open.
Frosted glass makes sense for homeowners with a more open bathroom layout. It’s harder to see through. Light can pass through, allowing silhouettes to be visible, but you get the spatial separation you’re looking for.
Clear glass helps the space feel larger and more open since you can see through it. It also lets you admire your shower design.

The best choice for you depends on what’s most important to you. In our experience, homeowners will choose frosted glass mainly for privacy. Again, remember that frosted glass requires more upkeep, even though it hides water spots very well.
If you’re looking for something easier to clean and that makes the bathroom look more open, clear glass is usually the better option. Clear glass does show material buildup, but the surface is generally easier to clean.
