What Matters Most

The best bathroom remodelers in San Diego (in alphabetical order) include:

  • Jackson Design & Remodeling
  • Lars Remodeling & Design
  • Murray Lampert Design Build Remodel
  • Optimal Home Remodeling & Design
  • Shugarman's Bath

The home improvement industry is already difficult to navigate and understand. While San Diego residents know they’ll get good weather, they can’t all say the same about finding a good contractor. Homeowners have handed their trust and money to plenty of bathroom remodelers, only to have contractors who go silent, cut corners, or leave them with incomplete work (or a mix of all three).

Even if you don’t choose us for your next project, our goal is to make finding a bathroom remodeler easy. We made this list because Shugarman’s Bath knows the home improvement space well. We checked each company's license and workers' comp status, Google star ratings and review counts, BBB profiles, and websites for pricing, materials, and warranty details. We also checked whether the jobs are done in-house, by subcontractors, or a mix of both.

Before continuing, we want to be upfront and let you know that we put ourselves on this list. While we only remodel the tub and shower area, that space is the most important part of any bathroom remodel. It’s where waterproofing and plumbing issues are likely to happen. We’re a strong starting point for a full bathroom remodel. While we stand by our work and believe we belong here, we’re transparent enough to tell you that we're not the right fit for every project.

The 5 best companies below appear in alphabetical order. What makes each company stand out is based on the information they publish.

Table of Contents:

What Makes a Bathroom Remodeler Great in San Diego?

A great bathroom remodeler holds the right license, communicates clearly, keeps your project on schedule, is honest about cost, and fixes problems when something goes wrong.

A full bathroom remodel brings plumbers, electricians, tile setters, and cabinet installers into your home. A general contractor likely coordinates different trades and brings subcontractors into your home. A great company in charge keeps them all working together. If they can’t, homeowners end up paying for it with their time and money.

What Should You Look for When Hiring a Bathroom Remodeler?

We used the following criteria to vet every company on this list. We’ll also explain why we use these criteria. You can use the same checklist for any contractor you're considering.

Licensing and Insurance

A contractor taking on a full bathroom remodel in California should hold a Class B General Building license from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). This license lets them take on projects involving 2 or more unrelated trades.

We've also noted when a company holds additional licenses. Specialty licenses, like a C36 Plumbing license, show the contractor has taken a separate state exam and met the state's requirements in that trade.

We’ve excluded companies that only hold a B-2 Residential Remodeling Contractor license. This license only permits contractors to make cosmetic changes to the home, which means they can’t do projects that involve moving a wall or reworking a layout.

You can look up any license and workers’ comp insurance on the CSLB website. Make sure all their licenses and insurance are active.

The CSLB website also shows whether a contractor carries workers’ compensation insurance. Always make sure a contractor has this coverage if a worker is hurt on the job. If a contractor doesn’t have it, an injured worker could sue you to cover the cost.

You can look up any license and workers’ comp insurance on the CSLB website. Make sure all their licenses and insurance are active.

Google Reviews

Reviews give you and other homeowners a good gauge of how you and your home will be treated during your remodel. Every company listed here holds at least 4.5 stars on Google.

We also considered the number of reviews. A company with higher volume and a good rating says more about them than one with fewer reviews.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) Rating and Accreditation

A BBB rating ranges from A+ to F and is based on complaint history, how complaints were handled, licensing, and years in business. Every company on this list holds an A or A+.

A BBB-accredited business has applied for membership, paid a fee, and agreed to follow the BBB's accreditation standards. Accreditation isn't required to make this list, but it is a good sign of how a company runs its business.

Bathroom Materials

This includes tile flooring, vanities, countertops, fixtures, shower materials, and waterproofing. All materials affect how well your bathroom holds up and how much cleaning it needs.

Many companies don’t list the materials they use on their website. We will note whether or not they have this information published.

Pricing

Pricing for a bathroom remodel in San Diego varies by contractor, scope of work, how much you want changed, and the materials you choose.

We’ve included whether a company publishes its pricing, along with whether each company includes free consultations. Some companies discuss your budget during a free consultation, while others charge for a design phase before giving you a final price.

Warranty

A good warranty tells you what the company will fix after your project is done and for how long. Warranties vary depending on the contractor.

We’ve included whether or not a company has published its warranty information.

Who Does the Work

Some remodelers use their own crews, and others will use a mix of employees and subcontractors for specific trades. There isn’t a problem with either approach, but we think it’s important for you to know who will be in your home and who is responsible for their work.

Pricing

Lars publishes pricing on its bathroom page. They say a San Diego bathroom remodel typically costs $45,000 to $100,000+. Pricing is broken into 4 categories:

  1. Guest / Hall Bath Refresh ($40,000 - $55,000+): Keeps the existing layout and updates fixtures, vanity, tile, lighting, and finishes.
  2. Mid-Range Full Bath ($45,000 - $60,000+): A more complete renovation with new tile, a custom vanity, glass shower, lighting, and plumbing fixtures.
  3. Multi-Bathroom Remodel ($80,000 - $150,000+): 2 or more bathrooms planned and built as one project.
  4. Structural / Luxury Bath ($100,000+): Wall changes, curbless or wet-room showers, steam, accessibility upgrades, and custom finishes.

Lars notes that the first 2 categories are general San Diego market benchmarks and usually aren't full design-build projects.

Lars offers a free in-home consultation. At that meeting, they review your goals, scope, timeline, and budget. They also provide an approximate cost range. The next step is a design agreement, where you receive a detailed scope summary, 3D renderings, and the full cost to complete your remodel.

According to their website, Optimal designs every bathroom to meet California's 2026 code updates. This includes water-saving toilets and showerheads, vacancy-sensor lighting, and moisture-sensing exhaust fans.

They also do smaller bathroom projects such as powder rooms, guest and hall bathrooms, tub-to-shower conversions, and cosmetic refreshes. A cosmetic refresh takes 1-2 weeks. For a full bathroom remodel, the whole process takes about 6 to 10 weeks from signed contract to final walkthrough.

Shugarman’s Bath

Shugarman's Bath is a family-owned tub and shower remodeling company founded by Jeff Shugarman and his three sons, Rick, Chase, and Casey. They've completed more than 7,000 tub and shower remodels across San Diego and Orange Counties. They have showrooms in San Diego and Anaheim.

For the last 5 years, San Diego Union-Tribune readers have voted Shugarman's Bath San Diego's Best Kitchen & Bath Remodeler, Local Construction Company, and Building Contractor. In 2026, Orange County Register readers also ranked them No. 3 for kitchen and bath remodeling specialist, marking their first time making the Best of Orange County list. They're also ranked #106 on Qualified Remodeler's Top 500 list and were named Bath Planet's 2025 Regional Dealer of the Year.

Their services include shower remodels, bathtub remodels, tub-to-shower conversions, and shower-to-tub conversions. Most projects are completed in 1 to 2 days.

Shugarman's Bath only remodels the tub and shower area. They don't install vanities, flooring, tile, or paint outside that space. Because of that, they can be a strong place to start for a full bathroom remodel.

Shugarman's Bath estimates that a tub or shower remodel makes up roughly 70% of a full bathroom remodel budget. A tub and shower remodel is the most likely spot for waterproofing and plumbing problems.
